GoodBuy: City Tweed HW on sale for $2 a ball in 2 colors

Oh KnitPicks, how you tease me!!  I am currently working with City Tweed DK in making the
Barnwood Hat by Alicia Plummer (AliciaPlum on ravelry).  As I'm using it I keep thinking how much I *love* it, and want to get more. Lo and behold an email appears in my box telling of a special $2 a ball sale for the Toad and Kitten colors in the HW, a 60% savings!

I think I need a sweater's worth of both, please!

Rule #1. Don't ever go to a yarn store unless you plan on buying something.

Today I was in the neighborhood of little yarn shop that carries many of the smaller label artisans. I was perfectly happy walking around, petting all the yarn, making notes of ones that I would like to look up at a future time. I had no plans on buying anything. None. Wasn't going to happen.

Then, as I made my toward the exit, close to safely escaping with all my money still in my wallet, I spotted it. A basket full of Claudia Hand Painted Yarns in Chunky, one of my absolute favorite yarns. I don't see it in stores often, and it was on the sale rack for 25% off. How could I resist?  The only thing left to do is choose between the deep purple or aqua blue colors.

As I have a lot of aqua already, I went with the deep purple (which has become a theme color for me).

The picture doesn't do justice to this stunning color. The colorway is called Last Night's Wine, and I wonder if that was the inspiration or what she actually used as a dye color!

I limited myself to just the one skein, which I will happily use for a cowl or hat. I prefer smaller projects anyway.

Susie's Reading Gloves soon to be on the needles

Susie Rogers' Reading Mitts by Susie Rogers
I have had Susie Rogers' Reading Mitts in my ravelry queue since 2011. Based on the umpteen thousands of projects registered online, I'm not alone. They are a lovely design and seem elegant and not too difficult. I have avoided these a bit because knitting in the round on 4 pointed needles scared me. Don't ask me why. But I think I'm ready to try Magic Loop with these. I may even try them two at a time, but that may be tempting the fates to laugh at me.

After much deliberation during which I researched every 4 and 5 star DK yarn on rav, I finally chose Valley Yarns Northfield in the Grape colorway. I chose this yarn because I loved the color and it had fabulous reviews on ravelry. I've learned the hard way never to buy yarn without reading all the reviews and comments on rav and whatever other website has reviews (like WEBS). The reviews said it was a dream to work with, soft and not splitty. I hate splitty. The projects I saw all looked fabulous. The colors seem very rich and even. When it came I was happy it was SO soft and squishy.
Will keep you posted on that progress.
0ctober O's Reading Mitts. I can only hope mine will turn out half as good as these!

Are you very picky when you choose yarn for a project? How do you choose?
